Our Scientific Capacity-Building Program seeks to increase medical research, diagnosis, and infectious disease control by local scientists in the developing world. The program does so through a four-prong approach that includes in-country training workshops, small grants for research projects, donations of much-need laboratory supplies, and ongoing networking and consulting. By strengthening the participants’ ability to identify and understand the diseases that affect large populations in their home countries, the program is supporting efforts that will lead to the implementation of improved diagnostics and public health programs in their countries.
The Scientific Capacity-Building Program takes science to disease-endemic regions so that resident scientists can adapt techniques and study design to the local conditions. All workshops are participatory, hands-on, and conducted in the local language. To encourage South-South knowledge transfer as well as greater local ownership of the program, resident scientists are incorporated in the planning and teaching process. Several of the locales where we conduct trainings, including Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, have recently seen an unprecedented increase in the incidence of infectious diseases such as leishmaniasis, leptospirosis, and dengue. Our support has been crucial in detecting and containing outbreaks in these and other countries in a timely manner.
